About Us

Founded in 1973, Friends of West Florida Public Library is a nonprofit, community membership organization supporting our public library for more than 40 years. The Friends is an active group of local citizens who strengthen the county’s public library system through library advocacy, creative learning, and literacy support. Our mission is to advocate for literacy and learning in the community and the West Florida Public Library by expanding resources and fostering their availability.

Initiatives

The Friends support a wide variety of projects at our libraries. Each year, the Friends provide major funding to support the WFPL Summer Reading Program, during which nearly 3,000 kids read over the summer, attend fun and informative programs, and have the chance to win an awesome assortment of prizes.

A sample of our recent projects include:

The Big Read
A county-wide reading program designed to encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. Our program featured Tim O’Brien’s award winning novel The Things They Carried.

The Way We Worked

A Smithsonian Traveling exhibition The Way We Worked, adapted from an original exhibition developed by the National Archives, explored how work became such a central element in American culture by tracing the many changes that affected the workforce and work environments over the past 150 years.

Children’s Reading Room Technology
Funded through an Impact 100 grant, the Friends initiated renovations, computers, and family reading programs for a children’s reading room and literacy center in an impoverished area of Escambia County.

Exploring Pensacola History
Partially funded through the Florida Humanities Council, the Friends supported a series of lectures and programs that highlighted the rich and diverse history of Pensacola and our surrounding community.
