Be part of the Big Read!

The West Florida Public Library is presenting the Big Read in Escambia County during the months of October and November. The Big Read is a one-book, one community initiative to encourage reading and discussion. This year’s book The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien is a modern classic about the Vietnam War. It is about the actual things the soldiers carried (“As a first lieutenant and platoon leader, Jimmy Cross carried a compass, maps, code books, binoculars, and a .45-caliber pistol that weighed 2.9 pounds fully loaded. He carried a strobe light and the responsibility for the lives of his men.”), but it is also about the things they carried home with them—the pain, the loss, and the memories. Despite dealing with hard issues, The Things They Carried is ultimately a beautifully written book about the human heart.

To kick off Escambia County’s Big Read, Vietnam veteran and author Tim O’Brien will be in Pensacola to talk about the his experiences in the war, The Things They Carried and writing. He will be at the following events, which are all free and open to the public:
